Kahoot!

One example of how I used ICT to enhance learning is by using a Kahoot. This is essentially an online quizzing tool that also provides a competitive environment. On my second practice, I used the Kahoot as a formative assessment tool during the Year 10 Global Systems topic. The students were highly engaged and frequently asked to do more Kahoot quizzes. For this reason, I used the Kahoot to enhance learning through stronger engagement. Furthermore, the quiz allowed me to identify students who were struggling with key concepts. Through additional scaffolding, these students were able to successfully complete the following assessment and demonstrate their knowledge of the biogeochemical cycles.

Based on the SAMR model, this use of Kahoot would be an example of augmentation (see standard 1.2). We are substituting a traditional MCQ (multiple choice question) quiz with an online quiz that provides additional functions such as real-time collaboration and competition.

Symbaloo

Another example of how ICT can be used to provide more learning opportunities is through an application (app) known as Symbaloo. This app allows the teacher to create a workspace that guides students throughout the topic. This is similar to a roadmap that allows students to work at their own pace. Therefore, it can be used as a tool to differentiate for the learning needs of students. Moreover, we can add a link to online creation tools such as Canva, Piktochart or Moovly. These online tools are free to use and allow students to create their own posters, infographics, and animations. This will stimulate higher-order thinking skills such as creating and therefore enhance student learning.

According to the SAMR model, this would be an example of ICT modification (see standard 1.2). This is because we are essentially redesigning a traditional poster-creation task so that students can work at their own pace. Hence, it gives students more flexibility and promotes student autonomy.
